3-D Collage and Couture in NYC

Wow!  I just visited the American Folk Art Museum’s (link) and saw the exhibit (link) of Folk Art and Couture.  What a wonderful display of imagination, collaboration and couture.  For me it was collage come to life.

Fourteen clothing designers picked items from the museum’s collection of American folk art, and designed clothes around them.  The designers, including Koos van den Aker and Catherine Maldrino (sp?) riffed on items from a weathervane to a beautiful (what year? ) white quilt and dressed mannequins in everything from a dress made of kraft paper and photos (my favorite, by designer XXX) to a gorgeous coat loomed on a special RISD jacquard loom to a red carpet-worthy patchwork gown.  Check out the porcupine dress from (designer) too.

By the luckiest coincidence, I also got to meet the charming curator, (name) who conceived the exhibit and has worked for the past year to bring it to life.   The whole show is a yummy don’t-miss for anyone within shouting distance of New York City who loves clothes, loves art, or just wants to see great imaginations at play, and the friendly museum is right across the street from Lincoln Center.
